How long will my case take?
The length of time it takes to resolve a case depends on the
number and complexity of the issues involved as well as the court time the case
requires. While we cannot give a definitive answer to this question, we have
given some general guidelines below:
Family Court Cases: The length of time it takes to resolve a family law matter
depends on several factors: the complexity of the issues, the amount of court
time necessitated by the case, how contested the issues are, and how much the
opposing party wants to fight. It is also important to realize that the court
docket (the cases to be heard by the court) can get very crowded with numerous
cases filed each year and attorneys have no control over the docket. As a
general rule it will take the average case about a year to complete.
Criminal Law Cases: Every case is different, but a state level criminal law case
generally takes about six months to one year before it is fully resolved.
Federal cases generally move a little faster.
